Lip fillers, also known as lip injections or lip augmentation, are dermal fillers that are injected into the lips to shape, fill, smooth, and plump. We use RHA, and Revanesse lip fillers to achieve our clients' goals.
How does Lip Filler Work?
During the procedure, your practitioner will use a fine needle to inject the filler into various points in your lips, depending on the desired outcome. The injection process can be uncomfortable, but most people find it tolerable. To minimize pain and discomfort, your practitioner may apply a numbing cream or ice pack to your lips before the injection.
After the injection, you may experience some swelling, bruising, or redness in the treated area. This is normal and usually subsides within a few days. You may also experience some temporary numbness or tingling in your lips, which should also resolve on its own.

The Russian Lip Technique
Many clients ask us for the "russian lip," which is a technique, also known as russian tenting, in which we make multiple vertical injections in the top lip, filling as we pull the needle out to draw the vermillion border up and give it extra height. On the bottom lip we focus on adding filler on both sides of the center, giving it a pillowy plump and creating that keyhole pout. In many cases we will fill the vermillion borders, especially the cupids bow) to accentuate the shape, create symmetry, and make your lips pop!
How Russian Lips Are Acheived
The term Russian Lips is based on the style of lips sees on Russian stacking dolls (or matryoshka), with a defined Cupid's bow and fullness in the middle of lips. This special lip enhancement technique aims to create that slight heart shape with a more voluminous center, lifting the lip rather than adding excessive volume. The Russian Lips are ideal for lip filler newbies or those seeking a natural look.
Russian lips are achieved by injecting small amounts of dermal filler vertically into the lip, as opposed to the regular horizontal injections. We use a smaller syringe to maintain more control over the exact placement of the filler, injecting from the base of the lip and outwards toward the lip border, concentrating most of the volume on the center.
Lip Filler Preparation
24-48 hours before your appointment, avoid:
- Ibuprofen, Motrin, Aspirin, Aleve (NSAIDS)
- Caffeine
- Alcohol
- Supplements like St. John's Wort, Gingko Biloba, garlic, ginseng, Vitamin E, etc.
- Bleaching or any type of hair removal in the area to be treated
DO take arnica as directed on the label starting 24-48 hours before your appointment to prevent bruising.
Lip Filler Procedure
Please arrive for your appointment with a clean face (no makeup, moisturizer, etc.). After an initial consultation, the area may be numbed with a topical anesthetic. "Before" photos will be taken so we can assess the results over time, then the area will be cleaned with alcohol and injection will begin. Injection takes anywhere from 15 to 45 minutes, depending on the type of procedure. Arnica oil will be applied post-injection and "after" photos will be taken.
Recovery
Minor bruising, redness, swelling and tenderness is common for a few days after filler is injected. Patients should avoid touching, picking at or scratching the area of injection during healing, as well as strenuous activity within the twenty-four hours after treatment. Patients should ice the area intermittently on the first day, as well as apply arnica gel or take arnica pills and eat pineapple to prevent bruising. Patients should avoid taking NSAIDS, aspirin or alcohol for 48-72 hours after injection.
