IPL Photofacial Long Island

What is a IPL Photofacial?

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) laser treatment is a cosmetic procedure that uses a high-intensity light source to treat a variety of skin conditions. IPL laser treatment works by emitting multiple wavelengths of light that target specific chromophores in the skin. Chromophores are molecules that absorb certain wavelengths of light, and they are responsible for the color of the skin, hair, and blood vessels.

IPL laser treatment is a non-invasive and non-ablative procedure, which means it does not damage the surface of the skin. Instead, the light energy is absorbed by the chromophores in the skin, causing them to break down and be eliminated by the body's natural processes.

How does IPL Laser Treatment Work?

IPL laser treatment works by emitting a broad spectrum of light that targets the chromophores in the skin. The light energy is absorbed by the chromophores, which causes them to heat up and break down. The body's natural processes then eliminate the broken-down chromophores, resulting in clearer, more youthful-looking skin.

IPL laser treatment can target a variety of chromophores, including melanin, hemoglobin, and collagen. Melanin is responsible for the color of the skin, and IPL laser treatment can be used to treat hyperpigmentation, sun damage, and age spots. Hemoglobin is found in blood vessels, and IPL laser treatment can be used to treat broken blood vessels and rosacea. Collagen is a protein that provides structure to the skin, and IPL laser treatment can stimulate collagen production, reducing fine lines and wrinkles.

Our Process for IPL Photofacial Treatment

Preparing for IPL Treatment

Before undergoing IPL laser treatment, you should:

  • Avoid sun exposure for at least two weeks before the procedure

  • Avoid tanning beds or self-tanning products for at least two weeks before the procedure

  • Avoid using skincare products that contain retinol or glycolic acid for at least a week before the procedure

  • Shave the treatment area before the procedure

  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing to the appointment

The Procedure

Before the procedure, your healthcare provider will apply a cooling gel to the treatment area. During the procedure, a handheld device will be used to deliver the IPL laser energy to the skin. You may feel a mild stinging sensation, but most people find the procedure to be relatively painless.

The procedure usually takes between 20-30 minutes, depending on the size of the treatment area. After the procedure, your healthcare provider will apply a soothing cream to the skin and provide you with instructions on how to care for the treated area.

Aftercare & Recovery

After the procedure, you may experience redness, swelling, or mild discomfort in the treatment area. These symptoms usually subside within a few hours to a few days. To aid in the healing process, you should:

  • Apply a cold compress to the treated area for 10-15 minutes at a time, several times a day, for the first 24 hours

  • Avoid sun exposure for at least two weeks after the procedure

  • Wear sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 when outside

  • Avoid using skincare products that contain retinol or glycolic acid for at least a week after the procedure

  • Avoid hot showers or baths, saunas, or steam rooms for at least 48 hours after the procedure

  • Avoid strenuous exercise or activities that cause sweating for at least 48 hours after the procedure

How many Treatments are Required?

The number of IPL laser treatments required depends on the condition being treated and the individual's skin type. Most people require between three to six treatments, spaced four to six weeks apart, to achieve the desired results. Maintenance treatments may be required every six to 12 months to maintain the results.
