What is Belotero?

Belotero is a FDA-approved dermal filler that is used to fill in wrinkles, folds, and depressions in the skin. It is made of HA, a complex sugar that occurs naturally in the body and helps keep the skin hydrated and elastic. Belotero is formulated with a unique cross-linking technology that makes it more cohesive and durable, while also allowing it to integrate smoothly with the surrounding tissues. This means that Belotero can be used in areas with thin or delicate skin, such as around the eyes or mouth, without causing lumps, bumps, or other visible signs of treatment. Belotero Balance® is our go-to filler for tear trough.

How Does Belotero Work?

Belotero works by adding volume and hydration to the skin, which helps to smooth out wrinkles, lines, and hollows. When injected into the skin, the HA particles attract and hold onto water molecules, which plumps up the skin from the inside. At the same time, Belotero helps to stimulate the production of collagen, a protein that gives the skin its structure and elasticity. Over time, the new collagen helps to support the skin and maintain the results of the treatment.

What Can Belotero Treat?

Belotero is most popular as a Tear Trough filler, but is versatile enough to treat a range of common skin concerns. This includes:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes (crow's feet), mouth (smile lines), and forehead (frown lines)

  • Vertical lip lines (smoker's lines) and marionette lines (the lines that extend from the corners of the mouth)

  • Hollows under the eyes and in the cheeks

  • Nasolabial folds (the lines that run from the nose to the mouth)

  • Acne scars and other depressions in the skin

Belotero: About the Process

What to Expect During Belotero Treatment

Belotero treatment typically takes between 15 and 30 minutes, depending on the size and number of areas being treated. Before the doctor will clean the area and may apply a numbing cream to reduce any discomfort. They will then use a small needle to inject the Belotero into the targeted areas. Most patients describe the sensation as a mild pressure or pinch, but it is generally well-tolerated. After the injections, the doctor may massage the treated areas to ensure even distribution of the filler.

Recovery & Aftercare

One of the advantages of Belotero is that there is little to no downtime required. You can usually return to your daily activities immediately after the treatment. However, it is normal to experience some swelling, redness, and tenderness at the injection site for a few hours or days after the treatment. Applying ice or a cold compress can help reduce these side effects. You should avoid touching or rubbing the treated areas for at least 24 hours after the treatment, and avoid intense heat, such as saunas or sunbathing, for a few days. Your aesthetician may also recommend avoiding alcohol, aspirin, or other blood-thinning medications that could increase the risk of bruising.

How Long Does Belotero Results Last?

The longevity of Belotero results varies depending on the individual, the area treated, and other factors such as age, lifestyle, and skincare routine. In general, Belotero results can last between 6 and 12 months. However, some patients may notice results lasting up to 18 months with proper aftercare and touch-up treatments.

Risks & Side Effects

Like any medical procedure, Belotero injections carry some risks and potential side effects. The most common side effects include redness, swelling, bruising, tenderness, and itching at the injection site. These side effects are usually mild and temporary, and should resolve within a few days. In rare cases, more serious side effects such as infection, allergic reactions, or vascular occlusion (blocked blood flow) can occur. However, these complications are very rare and can often be prevented with proper injection technique and aftercare.
